As we await to see if convicted quadruple murderer Bryan Kohberger will get a trial down the road, the case of the Idaho 4 continues to draw attention on social media and in the media in general.
Maddie Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin were murdered inside a Moscow, Idaho college rental home at 1122 King Road in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022. The four were all students at the University of Idaho.
Around six weeks later, Bryan Kohberger, a graduate assistant at nearby Washington State University in Pullman (just across the border from Moscow), was arrested on the other side of the country at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania.
Fast-forward some three years later, and Kohberger passed on a trial and opted to plead guilty to the murders. Doing a complete flip a summer later, Kohberger now says that he was forced to plead guilty, had bad legal representation, etc.
The chances of Kohberger, who is now working with an Idaho public defender, getting a trial may be slim. His defense team would have to climb a high bar to show he had bad legal advice and so on. He would also have to explain why he voluntarily pled guilty to the heinous crimes. If you truly believe in your innocence, it doesn’t make much sense to plead guilty. The only reason I can think of off the top of my head would be threats against him and/or his family if he did not take the fall.
While none of us have access to Kohberger in his state prison cell, it would be interesting to have a chat.
If you could talk to him for a few minutes, what questions would you have for him?
Among the things I would want answers to would be:
- The obvious question would be: Did you murder these four students?
- If you’re not the killer, do you know who is?
- Were you at 1122 King Road at any point on either the evening of Nov. 12 or the early morning hours of Nov. 13?
- Had you had any prior contact with the four victims?
- Did you ever have any contact with survivors Dylan Mortensen or Bethany Funke?
- Have you ever eaten at the former Mad Greek restaurant in Moscow where Mogen and Kernodle worked part-time while in school?
- Did you ever buy or sell drugs with any of the four victims?
- Were you out stargazing in the early morning hours of Nov. 13?
- If you could say anything to the parents of the four victims, what would it be?
- Would you be willing to testify on your own behalf should there be a trial?
While we wait and see what the next turn is in this tragic case, will Kohberger eventually get another chance to prove his innocence or is this just a legal ploy to get attention?
